After a decade of planning weddings on both coasts, I will tell you the honest version: for most couples, the deciding factor is not the beach. Both are beautiful. It is the math on the guest list.<\/p>\n

Punta Cana consistently prices below the Riviera Maya and well below Los Cabos for a comparable standard of resort. That gap does real work when you have forty or eighty people trying to say yes. A couple hundred dollars per person across a four-night stay is often the difference between your college roommate booking and your college roommate sending a card.<\/p>\n

The second factor is concentration. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) handled roughly 10.7 million passengers in 2025, making it the second-busiest airport in the Caribbean after San Juan. PUJ receives nonstop service from more than twenty U.S. cities, with flight times generally in the three-to-five-hour range. American, Delta, JetBlue, United, Southwest and Frontier all fly it, and Miami, New York and Atlanta are among the heaviest routes. New service continues to be added \u2014 Kansas City picked up nonstop service in 2026.<\/p>\n

East Coast and Southeast guests can leave in the morning and be poolside by mid-afternoon. West Coast guests will connect and should plan a full travel day. Ground transfer is the underrated part. Most of the wedding corridor sits twenty-five to forty-five minutes from the terminal. Royalton Punta Cana<\/a> on Playa Arena Gorda, for example, is about twenty-five minutes out. Compare that with Riviera Maya properties an hour-plus south of Cancun, and you have saved every guest ninety minutes of round-trip bus time. Grandparents notice this. I am not going to give you a number, and you should be skeptical of any planner who gives you one before asking your guest count. Here is the structure instead, because the structure is what you can control.<\/p>\n

Your guests’ room nights.<\/strong> All-inclusive, per person, per night. This is the largest line item for your guests and it is the one that determines who attends.<\/p>\n

The wedding package.<\/strong> Nearly every resort bundles a base package \u2014 ceremony setup, officiant, basic florals, a cake, a set number of photos. Many resorts waive or heavily discount this package once your group books a threshold number of room nights. This is the single most useful lever in destination wedding budgeting, and it is why booking the group through a planner rather than letting everyone book individually matters more than couples realize.<\/p>\n

Per-person costs above the package, plus private event fees.<\/strong> Anything past the included headcount is charged per head \u2014 dinner, bar, chairs, setup \u2014 and closing a beach, terrace or restaurant for your group is billed separately from the food.<\/p>\n

What should you know about money and logistics on the ground?<\/h2>\n

The local currency is the Dominican peso (RD$ or DOP), which has recently traded near RD$60 to one U.S. dollar. U.S. dollars are accepted throughout the resort corridor, and inside an all-inclusive you will rarely need pesos at all. Bring small U.S. bills for tipping \u2014 customary rather than required.<\/p>\n

Every traveler entering or leaving the Dominican Republic must complete the free electronic entry form, the E-Ticket (Viajero Digital), online before flying. It costs nothing, and it catches out roughly one guest per wedding who skipped the welcome email \u2014 put it on your wedding website in bold, and again in the two-week reminder.<\/p>\n

When should you get married in Punta Cana?<\/h2>\n

December through April is the dry, breezy peak \u2014 best weather, highest rates, and the dates go first. May, early June and late November are the sweet spot for value against acceptable weather. Couples do marry in those months at real savings, but only with proper travel insurance and a resort that has a credible indoor backup space.
