The deciding factor is usually one of two things: where your guest list lives, and whether swimming matters to you.<\/p>\n<p>That second one deserves a warning most articles won&#8217;t give you, so let&#8217;s start there.<\/p>\n<h2>Can your guests actually swim in Los Cabos?<\/h2>\n<p>Often, no \u2014 and it&#8217;s the single most important thing to understand before booking a Cabo wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the Los Cabos coastline is not safe for swimming. The Pacific side is open ocean with no reef and no protective bay: the seafloor drops off steeply within a few meters of the sand, waves break directly onto the beach, and rip currents are powerful enough to pull strong swimmers out. Several of the most photographed luxury resorts in Cabo sit on beaches where you simply cannot get in the water. It fronts <a href=\"https:\/\/weddingplan360.com\/listing\/hilton-los-cabos\/\">Hilton Los Cabos<\/a>, whose venues include the Enclave Beach Club and a Whale Watching Terrace built for sunset cocktails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>None of this makes Cabo a bad wedding destination. It makes it one where <em>resort selection carries more weight<\/em>. If your vision includes guests in the water between events, or a welcome party on the sand with kids playing, you must choose a property on one of those protected stretches. If it&#8217;s a cliffside ceremony with the Pacific crashing behind you and nobody swimming at all, Cabo is spectacular and you can book almost anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Cancun has no equivalent problem. The Mesoamerican reef sits offshore and takes the energy out of the swell, so the water at essentially every resort beach is warm, calm, and swimmable. For a Southern California guest list, Cabo is a long lunch away and Cancun is a travel day. Los Cabos now has nonstop service from roughly thirty U.S. cities, concentrated in the West and Mountain regions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the East Coast and the South, Cancun wins just as decisively.<\/strong> Atlanta to Cancun is around two hours forty minutes; the same trip to Cabo is roughly four and a half. New York to Cancun is about four hours nonstop. Cancun is one of the most heavily served leisure airports in the hemisphere \u2014 more nonstops, more frequencies, more fare competition, and that saving multiplies across every guest you invite.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers favor Cancun slightly. From Cancun International, the Hotel Zone is 15\u201335 minutes. From Los Cabos International, San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo is 25\u201330 minutes, the Tourist Corridor 30\u201345, Cabo San Lucas 45\u201350 \u2014 add ten or fifteen for afternoon arrivals in high season.<\/p>\n<p>The practical test I give couples: draw up the guest list, sort by home airport, and count. If more than about 60% sit west of Denver, Cabo. If more than about 60% sit east of it, Cancun. A four-hour difference in flight time changes who actually comes.<\/p>\n<h2>How different is the weather, really?<\/h2>\n<p>More different than most couples expect, because these are genuinely different climates.<\/p>\n<p>Los Cabos is <strong>desert<\/strong>. It receives roughly eight to nine inches of rain a year. Cancun receives around fifty-three. If a dry outdoor ceremony with no tent contingency is your priority, Cabo is one of the safest bets in Mexico from November through April, and the low humidity is a real comfort difference for guests in suits.<\/p>\n<p>Both have a hurricane season \u2014 eastern Pacific from May 15 through November 30, Atlantic and Caribbean June through November with peak risk August through October. Cabo sees direct hits less often, but &#8220;rarely&#8221; is not &#8220;never,&#8221; and September is the month I&#8217;d steer either destination away from.<\/p>\n<p>The detail that catches people out is <strong>water temperature<\/strong>. Cancun&#8217;s Caribbean sits between roughly 77\u00b0F in January and 85\u00b0F in August \u2014 swimmable every month. Cabo&#8217;s swings much harder, and from mid-winter into spring the average can sit at or below 70\u00b0F. That&#8217;s bracing rather than pleasant. If you&#8217;re planning a January Cabo wedding and picturing guests in the ocean, picture them in a heated pool instead.<\/p>\n<p>One thing Cabo has that Cancun cannot: whales. Between roughly December 15 and April 30, humpbacks and gray whales migrate through the waters off Baja, peaking in January and February. Couples with winter dates regularly watch whales breach from their ceremony site.<\/p>\n<p>Cabo also has no sargassum \u2014 the seaweed that hits the Caribbean coast from roughly May through October is not a Pacific phenomenon. If your date falls in that window, that&#8217;s a legitimate point in Cabo&#8217;s favor.<\/p>\n<h2>What will each one cost you?<\/h2>\n<p>Cancun is the better value, and the reason is structural rather than incidental.<\/p>\n<p>Cancun and the Riviera Maya have the deepest all-inclusive market in the country, from modest family properties to ultra-luxury. That competition compresses prices at every tier, kids-stay-free promotions are common, and one wedding block can accommodate guests with very different budgets. It&#8217;s often the actual reason couples choose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cancun gives you colour.<\/strong> Turquoise water, white sand, palms, that unmistakable Caribbean gradient from jade to deep blue. It photographs bright and joyful, and sunrise is over the water in the Hotel Zone \u2014 a gift for early portraits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cabo gives you drama.<\/strong> Granite headlands, card\u00f3n cactus, ochre desert running straight into navy ocean, the rock arch at Land&#8217;s End. It photographs moody and cinematic, and sunset over the Pacific is spectacular in a way the east-facing Caribbean coast can&#8217;t replicate. If your palette leans terracotta, sage, and bone rather than aqua and coral, Cabo serves you better.<\/p>\n<p>Cabo also offers something Cancun mostly doesn&#8217;t: credible non-beach settings. <a href=\"https:\/\/weddingplan360.com\/listing\/acre-resort\/\">Acre Resort<\/a> in San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo isn&#8217;t beachfront at all \u2014 it&#8217;s a farm-to-table estate with a palm forest, a mango orchard venue seating 200, and capacity up to 500 for a ceremony. For couples who love Cabo&#8217;s landscape but don&#8217;t want a beach ceremony, that inland option is a strong play.<\/p>\n<h2>Are the legal requirements the same?<\/h2>\n<p>Close, but not identical, because marriage law in Mexico is set at the state level. Cancun is in Quintana Roo; Los Cabos is in Baja California Sur.<\/p>\n<p>Both require a civil ceremony performed by a Registro Civil official to be legally binding \u2014 a symbolic or religious ceremony alone does not marry you anywhere in Mexico. Both require passports, your Mexican entry document, apostilled birth certificates translated into Spanish, prior divorce or death certificates where relevant, and four witnesses over 18. Both expect you on the ground several business days ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The difference worth flagging: Quintana Roo removed its pre-nuptial medical certificate requirement in 2026, while Baja California Sur has historically required a locally performed blood test and medical certificate. Rules change, so confirm the current position with your planner rather than a blog \u2014 but budget an extra clinic appointment into a legal Cabo timeline, and none into a legal Cancun one.<\/p>\n<p>As always, most of my couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Mexico. It removes this entire category of problem.<\/p>\n<h2>So which should you choose?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Choose Los Cabos if:<\/strong> your guest list is concentrated on the West Coast, you&#8217;re marrying between November and April, you want the lowest possible rain risk, your aesthetic runs desert-dramatic rather than tropical-bright, or you want your guests to see whales. Choose it knowing you must select your resort around water access rather than assuming it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose Cancun if:<\/strong> your guests are spread across the country or concentrated in the East, the budget range across your list is wide, you want guaranteed swimmable water and a shorter transfer, or your group includes small children and older relatives for whom a four-hour flight plus a connection is a genuine barrier. On this point the two aren&#8217;t comparable.
