It is four or five, spread over three or four days, each with its own space, its own noise level, its own catering problem and its own idea of what “sunset” means. Most destination-wedding pages flatten all of that into a single line — “we welcome Indian weddings” — and leave you to discover at the planning stage that the resort has one ballroom, a 10pm noise curfew and no idea what a baraat is.

This guide does the opposite. It goes ceremony by ceremony — Ganesh Puja, Mehndi, Haldi, Sangeet, Baraat, the Pheras, Vidaai, and the reception — and for each one names the Cancun and Riviera Maya resorts in our directory that actually publish provision for it, in their own words. Where a resort makes no claim about a ceremony, we have not invented one.

If you want the money side instead, that lives in a separate guide: what a multi-event South Asian wedding actually costs, including the $9,099 starting figure and what is missing from it.

The short answer: four Cancun-area resorts are built for this

Out of the resorts we work with in the Cancun corridor, four publish genuine, named South Asian wedding provision rather than a polite willingness to try:

AVA Resort Cancun — its AVANI package is described as “tailored specifically for South Asian weddings,” and explicitly covers “multi-day events, including Mehndi, Sangeet, Baraat, and the wedding ceremony,” with master chefs for South Asian cuisine and planners experienced in South Asian traditions. Capacity up to 500.

Dreams Sapphire Resort & Spa — the Dulha & Dulhan package, the most itemised South Asian offering in our directory: Mehndi arrangements, Sangeet/Garba setup, baraat procession, mandap setup, ceremony, reception with traditional cuisine, sound and lighting, live entertainment options, and spa discounts for the couple and their parents. Capacity up to 300.

Generations Riviera Maya — carries a dedicated South Asian package: traditional South Asian ceremony location, mandap with floral décor, white garden chairs with coloured cushions, bilingual non-denominational minister, ceremony sound system. Capacity up to 400.

Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen — a South Asian Wedding Package whose specialists are, in the resort’s own words, “all certified by the South Asian Wedding Institute.” Capacity up to 300.

Two more matter for specific reasons. Moon Palace Cancun calls its bamboo-mandap setup “a favorite with our South Asian couples” and can hold up to 2,500 — by a wide margin the largest guest capacity in our Cancun directory. And NIZUC Resort & Spa lists Hindu ceremonies among the types it performs and works bespoke, with “no cookie-cutter packages.”

Ganesh Puja: the first event, and the one most resorts forget

The Ganesh Puja opens the wedding — a small, family-only prayer asking for obstacles to be removed before anything else begins. It needs almost nothing: a quiet indoor or shaded space, a low table, room for the priest and immediate family to sit on the floor, and tolerance for an open flame and incense.

That last part is where resorts quietly fail. Fire regulations and sprinkler systems in modern ballrooms often prohibit an open flame indoors, and this rarely comes up until late in planning. Ask specifically — not “can we do a puja” but “can we light a sacred fire indoors, and if not, which outdoor space can we use.”

One detail worth knowing: The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun itemises a Ganesh statue in its published mandap inventory, alongside the bamboo mandap, two beige capitonné armchairs, four white Chiavari chairs and a coffee table. A resort that lists a Ganesh statue as standard furniture has done this before.

Mehndi: shade, seating and time, not a stage

A garden plaza set for a mehndi at Generations Riviera Maya.

The mehndi is long and static. Guests sit for hours while henna is applied and dries. What it needs is shade, comfortable seating, food that survives being picked at over three hours, and — in the Yucatán — a realistic view of afternoon heat and humidity, because henna sets badly when everyone is sweating.

A garden plaza or covered terrace works far better than an open beach. Both Generations Riviera Maya and Dreams Sapphire publish mehndi arrangements as part of their South Asian packages, and AVA Resort Cancun names the mehndi explicitly in its multi-day planning.

Practical note: book the mehndi for late afternoon rather than midday. Cancun’s heat peaks between noon and 3pm, and a mehndi that starts at 4pm rolls naturally into the sangeet that evening.

Haldi: the ceremony nobody warns the resort about

Haldi is turmeric paste, applied generously, by everyone. Turmeric stains — permanently — linen, upholstery, pale stone and grout. Resorts that have hosted haldi ceremonies know to put it on a hard surface near water, usually a pool deck or a beach area that can be hosed down, and to use dark or disposable linens.

Resorts that have not hosted one will happily book you into a carpeted function room, and the conversation afterwards is not a pleasant one. This is worth raising directly and early. It is also a fast way to test whether a resort’s “we do South Asian weddings” is real: a coordinator who has genuinely run haldi will immediately start talking about surfaces and linens.

The properties above with dedicated South Asian coordinators — Dreams Sapphire assigns one “familiar with South Asian traditions,” and Hyatt Vivid‘s team is South Asian Wedding Institute certified — are the ones most likely to have that conversation unprompted.

Sangeet: the loudest night, and where curfews bite

The sangeet is a performance night — choreographed family dances, a DJ or live musicians, a stage, proper lighting and sound, and a run time that goes late. It is the single most demanding event of the wedding from a resort’s point of view, and the one where outdoor noise curfews cause the most damage.

Most Mexican beachfront resorts enforce an outdoor music curfew, commonly around 10pm or 11pm, after which the party either stops or moves indoors. If your sangeet is the centrepiece of the week, confirm two things in writing: the outdoor curfew time, and whether an indoor venue is available afterwards at no additional charge.

Dreams Sapphire publishes a Sangeet/Garba setup with sound system, lighting and live music options within its package. AVA Resort Cancun names the sangeet in its multi-day planning and offers “venues suitable for large gatherings” — the relevant phrase if your sangeet guest list is bigger than your ceremony one, which it often is.

Baraat: the procession that needs a route, not a room

A South Asian celebration at Moon Palace Cancun.

The baraat is the groom’s procession — dhol, dancing, and a slow, loud, joyful advance toward the ceremony. What it needs is a route: a stretch of resort ground, long enough to matter, that can be closed to other guests for thirty to forty-five minutes without shutting down the property.

This is the request most likely to be quietly declined at a busy all-inclusive, because it inconveniences non-wedding guests. Resorts that publish baraat provision have already solved it. Dreams Sapphire itemises a “baraat procession” in the Dulha & Dulhan package. AVA Resort Cancun lists the baraat among the multi-day events its planners handle.

Two questions settle it: what is the actual route, and is the resort willing to close it. A horse is a separate conversation again — most Mexican beach resorts cannot source one, and a decorated vehicle or a purely on-foot procession with dhol is the normal substitute.

The mandap and the pheras: the one thing every resort thinks it has

Almost every resort will tell you it can provide a mandap. What varies enormously is what arrives.

The published detail is the tell. The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun specifies a bamboo ceremony mandap with floral arrangements, and lists the furniture inside it down to the count — two armchairs, four Chiavari chairs, a coffee table, a Ganesh statue. Moon Palace Cancun describes a bamboo mandap with fresh flowers and foliage, filigree lanterns, and a white aisle and stage — and calls it a favourite among its South Asian couples. Generations Riviera Maya includes a mandap with floral décor and white garden chairs with coloured cushions.

For the pheras themselves, the two things to confirm are the sacred fire — see the Ganesh Puja note above, it is the same regulatory issue — and how long the ceremony may run. A full Hindu ceremony can last two to three hours. Resort ceremony slots are frequently scoped at one. That gap is a source of genuine friction and is much cheaper to resolve before you book.

Vidaai and the reception

The vidaai is short, emotional and needs only a clear exit path and somewhere for family to gather. It rarely causes logistical trouble.

The reception is where guest count and catering meet. Two things are worth checking specifically for an Indian reception: whether authentic South Asian cuisine is included or surcharged, and whether the kitchen can genuinely handle a full vegetarian and Jain menu at scale rather than as an afterthought.

AVA Resort Cancun publishes “master chefs to cater to traditional South Asian cuisines” within its South Asian package. Dreams Sapphire includes a reception with traditional cuisine and specialty menu options. Separately — and useful for the days around the wedding — Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres operates a full Indian restaurant on site, Bhogali, and Excellence Playa Mujeres counts Indian among its ten restaurants. That matters more than it sounds when you have relatives eating at the resort for five days.

Choosing by guest count

Guest count narrows the Cancun field faster than anything else. Published maximums from our directory:

Up to 2,500 — Moon Palace Cancun. The only property in our Cancun directory that comfortably absorbs a very large Indian wedding.

Up to 500 — AVA Resort Cancun, with a purpose-built South Asian package.

Up to 400 — Generations Riviera Maya, NIZUC Resort & Spa.

Up to 300 — Dreams Sapphire, Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen, The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun, Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres.

Up to 70 — Excellence Playa Mujeres. Adults-only and small; genuinely lovely, but not a multi-event Indian wedding venue.

One counter-intuitive point worth carrying into every conversation: a bigger guest list usually lowers your per-person cost, because a larger room block triggers waived venue fees and complimentary rooms. The 300-guest wedding is often better value per head than the 80-guest one.

A note on legal versus symbolic

A Hindu, Sikh or Muslim ceremony performed at a resort in Mexico is, in legal terms, symbolic — it is not what makes you married under Mexican law. Most couples handle the legal marriage at home and treat the destination ceremony as the real wedding, which is exactly how it is experienced by everyone present.

The mechanics, the documents and the regional differences are covered properly in our guide to symbolic versus legal ceremonies in Mexico. Read it before you book a date, not after.

What to ask before you sign

Can we light a sacred fire, and if not indoors, where outdoors?

What is the outdoor music curfew, and what indoor space is available afterwards — at what cost?

What is the baraat route, and will you close it?

How long is the ceremony slot? A full Hindu ceremony may need three hours.

Where can we hold the haldi, on a surface that turmeric cannot ruin?

Is South Asian cuisine included or surcharged, and can you serve a full vegetarian and Jain menu at scale?

Is the priest included? At Dreams Sapphire specifically, he is not.

How many rooms do we need to block before venue fees are waived?

Talk to someone who has run these

Every resort above is one we work with directly, and the packages quoted are from their own published material. If you tell us your guest count, your must-have ceremonies and roughly when you want to travel, we will tell you which of these actually fits — including when the answer is none of them.

Book a free consultation with our team, or browse every resort in our directory.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have a proper Indian wedding in Cancun?

Yes. Four resorts in the Cancun corridor publish dedicated South Asian wedding packages — AVA Resort Cancun, Dreams Sapphire, Generations Riviera Maya and Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen — covering mehndi, sangeet, baraat and the ceremony as separate events rather than a single wedding slot. Moon Palace Cancun holds up to 2,500 guests and describes its bamboo mandap as a favourite with its South Asian couples.

Will the resort provide a mandap?

The ones above will, and several publish the specification. The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun lists a bamboo mandap with floral arrangements and itemises the furniture inside it, including a Ganesh statue. Moon Palace Cancun describes a bamboo mandap with fresh flowers, foliage and filigree lanterns. Generations Riviera Maya includes a mandap with floral décor. Always ask to see a photograph of the actual mandap, not a render.

Can we do a real baraat at an all-inclusive resort?

At resorts that publish baraat provision, yes — Dreams Sapphire itemises a baraat procession, and AVA Resort Cancun lists it among the multi-day events it plans. The constraint is rarely willingness; it is the route, because a procession temporarily closes part of the resort to other guests. Confirm the specific route and the closure in writing. A horse is usually not available at Mexican beach resorts; dhol and an on-foot or decorated-vehicle procession is the norm.

How many days do we need for an Indian destination wedding?

Three to four is typical: mehndi and haldi on day one, sangeet on day two, baraat and ceremony on day three, with a reception that evening or the following day. Resorts that publish “multi-day” South Asian packages, as AVA Resort Cancun does, are pricing for this pattern; resorts that quote a single ceremony fee are not.

Is Indian food included, or extra?

It varies, and it is worth pinning down. AVA Resort Cancun publishes master chefs for traditional South Asian cuisine within its package, and Dreams Sapphire includes a reception with traditional cuisine and specialty menu options. At some resorts elsewhere in Mexico, Indian cuisine carries a surcharge. Separately, Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres has a full Indian restaurant on site and Excellence Playa Mujeres includes Indian among its restaurants — helpful for the days around the wedding.

Is a Hindu ceremony in Mexico legally binding?

No. A religious or cultural ceremony at a Mexican resort is symbolic. Most couples complete the legal marriage at home beforehand. See our guide to symbolic versus legal ceremonies in Mexico for the documents and the regional differences.

Does a bigger guest list cost more per person?

Usually the opposite. A larger room block triggers waived venue fees and complimentary rooms, so per-person cost tends to fall as the guest list grows. The bigger cost drivers are décor and entertainment, not headcount.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"Can you have a proper Indian wedding in Cancun?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Yes.
