Fourteen resorts in our directory publish a chapel on site \u2014 but only two of them actually use the word Catholic<\/em>, and only two more carry a saint or Marian dedication.<\/strong> Those four are Dreams Sapphire Resort & Spa<\/a> (Our Lady of Izamal, 150 guests), Moon Palace Cancun<\/a> (the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, 80), Grand Velas Riviera Maya<\/a> (Virgen de Guadalupe, 143) and Hard Rock Riviera Maya<\/a> (San Charbel, 100). The rest have a building called a chapel, which is not the same thing and may not be usable for a Catholic wedding at all. Here is the honest map, with capacities, and the questions that decide it.<\/p>\n

Which resorts have an actual Catholic chapel?<\/h2>\n

These four publish a religious identity rather than just a shape \u2014 but they do it in two different ways, and the difference is worth keeping straight. Only Dreams Sapphire and Moon Palace Cancun use the word “Catholic” in their own published copy.<\/strong> Grand Velas and Hard Rock instead carry Marian or saint dedications, which is strong evidence of a working Catholic chapel but is not the same as the resort saying so. Dreams Sapphire’s is the largest and the most explicit \u2014 it is published as “Our Lady of Izamal Catholic<\/em> Chapel”, seating 150, which is a genuine church-sized congregation rather than a token space. Izamal is a real Yucat\u00e1n pilgrimage town whose convent was visited by John Paul II, so the dedication is local rather than decorative. If a Catholic ceremony is the non-negotiable part of your wedding and your guest list is large, this is the strongest single option in the directory. Moon Palace Cancun’s chapel is the one most couples have seen in photographs without knowing what it is: a domed, cupola-topped building set on its own water feature. Its dedication is carved above the entrance in both languages \u2014 Capilla de la Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n \u00b7 Chapel of the Immaculate Conception<\/em><\/strong>. The resort’s own ceremony option for it specifies oak church pews and floral arrangements of Mexican calla lilies, and it is offered exclusively at that chapel. Eighty seats is the constraint to plan around.<\/p>\n

Grand Velas Riviera Maya’s Virgen de Guadalupe Chapel takes 143 \u2014 the second largest \u2014 and Hard Rock Riviera Maya’s San Charbel Chapel takes 100. Saint Charbel is a Maronite Catholic saint with a substantial devotional following in Mexico, which again suggests a working chapel rather than a styling choice.<\/p>\n

The interior settles it more firmly than the name does. The San Charbel chapel is fitted with fixed wooden pews, a stone altar wall and a full set of numbered Stations of the Cross<\/strong> \u2014 the fourteen plaques mounted along the side walls. Stations are devotional furniture; nobody installs them to make a venue photograph well. That is the single most reliable visual test you can apply to a resort chapel, and it is worth asking for interior photographs of any chapel on this page before you decide what it really is.<\/p>\n

One near-miss worth naming: The Grand at Moon Palace<\/a> publishes a ceremony option built around elegant church pews and chapel entrance floral arrangements<\/strong>, with witnesses provided \u2014 but it does not publish a standalone chapel capacity. Treat it as a chapel-style ceremony you need to ask about specifically, not as a confirmed church.<\/p>\n

Which resorts have a chapel that may not be Catholic?<\/h2>\n

These nine publish a chapel but say nothing about denomination \u2014 and the last two do not publish a capacity either. Some of them may well be consecrated; the point is that our listings do not say so, and neither should we<\/strong>. Two things in that table are worth pausing on.<\/p>\n

Banyan Tree Mayakoba’s chapel is by far the biggest in the directory<\/strong> \u2014 250 seated, 350 standing. Nothing else comes close, and for a large Catholic family wedding that number matters more than almost anything else on the page. Note that Fairmont Mayakoba names El Pueblito<\/em> too: Mayakoba is a shared complex of resorts, so both listings appear to point at the same chapel in the El Pueblito village. If you are choosing between Mayakoba properties on the strength of the chapel, ask us \u2014 the chapel may not be the differentiator you think it is, and the capacity figure comes from Banyan Tree’s listing rather than Fairmont’s.<\/p>\n

Generations Riviera Maya’s chapel seats 40.<\/strong> That is a very small room, and the resort separately publishes a Chapel Terrace Gazebo at 80 and a Beachfront Chapel Area at 400 for receptions and cocktails. The word “chapel” is doing three different jobs on one listing, which is exactly the kind of thing that produces a nasty surprise if you book off a brochure. Moon Palace does something similar: an 80-seat chapel with a 200-capacity Chapel Garden next to it for the reception.<\/p>\n

Why does the distinction matter?<\/h2>\n

Because a Catholic wedding is a sacrament with requirements attached, and a pretty building with an aisle does not satisfy them. For the ceremony to be a valid Catholic marriage you generally need it celebrated in a Catholic church or chapel by a priest or deacon with the authority to witness it there \u2014 and where that is not possible, a formal dispensation from the relevant diocese. A resort venue described only as “chapel” tells you nothing about any of that.<\/p>\n

One directory-wide fact makes the point better than anything else here: a sweep of all 90 listings for the word “priest” returns nothing at all.<\/strong> Not one resort publishes who would celebrate a Catholic wedding on its property. That is not evidence they cannot \u2014 it is evidence you have to ask.<\/p>\n

The practical failure mode we see is a couple booking a beautiful chapel, assuming the resort handles the religious side because it handles everything else, and discovering four months out that the resort’s officiant is a non-denominational minister and the chapel has never been consecrated. That is recoverable, but not cheaply and not calmly.<\/p>\n

What should you ask before you book?<\/h2>\n

Six questions, in this order. The first three are for the resort; the last three are for your parish.<\/p>\n
