Venue capacity that matches your real list, not your optimistic one. Almost every disappointment I’ve had to manage traces back to a couple who booked a resort with a 70-guest ceiling then invited 110 people. Get the number you need in writing, tied to the specific venue, before any deposit moves.

Room inventory that suits your guests. An all-inclusive isn’t just your venue, it’s your guests’ hotel for four nights. If half your list is bringing children and the resort is adults-only, you’ve split your wedding across two properties.

More than one ceremony option on the property. Rain happens, and wind off the Caribbean happens more than people expect. A resort with one beach gazebo and no covered alternative is one where a passing squall becomes a crisis. A resort with eight venues is one where it becomes a phone call.

Which resort is best for a large family wedding in the Hotel Zone?

Best for: big multigenerational weddings where guests want to be walking distance from Cancun itself.

Hyatt Ziva Cancun sits on Punta Cancun, the point where the Hotel Zone turns, which means water on two sides and genuinely dramatic ceremony backdrops. It is family-friendly, with a kids’ club, three oceanfront infinity pools, a full-service spa, direct beach access and 17 restaurants and bars. That last number matters more than it sounds: with 17 outlets, a hundred guests can eat when and how they like without you organising a thing.

Ceremony spaces run from the Cliff Gazebo at 65 guests up through Punta Vista Terrace at 200, the Sky Terrace (100 ceremony, 150 cocktail, 120 reception), Sahara Beach at 400, and the Elements Ballroom at 745. Worth flagging honestly: the same listing also states an overall wedding maximum of 200. Pin that gap down in writing before you sign — never assume the larger number. Five packages are offered, from “Just For the Two of You” through Intimate Elegance, Lavish & Opulent, Luxury and Luxury Zama.

Book elsewhere if: you want seclusion. Punta Cancun is the busiest, most built-up stretch of the Hotel Zone — a feature if your guests want nightlife and shopping, a bug if you pictured an empty beach.

Where should you get married if you want an adults-only wedding?

Best for: couples with a tight, grown-up guest list who want a polished, no-children weekend.

Excellence Playa Mujeres is adults-only and, in my experience, the most consistently well-run all-inclusive in the Cancun area. Ten buffet and à-la-carte restaurants cover Mexican, Italian, Asian, Indian, French, seafood and tapas. Packages come in three tiers — Excellence of Love, Gold, and Excellence Wedding — all with on-site coordinators, symbolic ceremonies, cocktail hours, receptions of three to four hours, spa services and photography.

Now the honest constraint, and it’s a hard one. The venues top out at 70 guests: Beach (70), Stone Gazebo (45), Spice Terrace (45), Convention Center Ballroom (70). If your list is 100 people, this is the wrong resort. Far better you hear that now than after your deposit clears.

Its sister property, Excellence Riviera Cancun, is also adults-only (18+) and sits in Puerto Morelos, halfway to Playa del Carmen. Six pools, the Miilé Spa, the same three tiers and the same ceiling: Beach at 70, Stone Gazebo at 45. Choose it if you want guests closer to the Riviera Maya.

Which resort handles 200+ guests without feeling like a convention?

Best for: large weddings, multi-day celebrations, and South Asian weddings that need several distinct spaces across several days.

Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres has the deepest venue bench in the region: fourteen listed spaces. The headliners are the Convention Center at 700, Beach Grand Palladium at 500, the Theater at 350, Convention Center Plaza and Foyer-Glassroom at 300 each, Deck Village at 200, plus terraces and ballrooms between 80 and 150 including a Crystal Chapel at 100. Seven restaurants are named, from Chang Thai to Portofino to Bhogali.

The structural advantage: the family-friendly resort sits alongside the adults-only TRS Coral Hotel. That solves the problem that quietly breaks most large destination weddings — your cousins with three toddlers and your friends who want silence can both be happy without leaving the complex.

The package includes ceremony coordination, attire preparation, a complimentary pre-wedding night room, florals, cake, a sparkling toast for up to ten guests, a one-hour cocktail party, and a live Mexican music trio. The resort is about 35 km from the airport, so build real transfer time into your welcome-day schedule.

Book elsewhere if: you have 30 guests. On a property at this scale, a small wedding can feel lost.

Is Hard Rock Hotel Cancun worth it for a wedding?

Best for: couples who want energy, a proper party, and plenty of daytime options for guests who don’t sit still.

Hard Rock Hotel Cancun is family-friendly with a kids’ club, nine restaurants, thirteen pools, a casino, a private beach and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Its ceremony list is unusually deep for the Hotel Zone: Eclipse Canal at 400, Toro Beach and Piano Beach at 350 each, Harmonica Beach at 300, Ipanema Garden at 200, plus intimate options like Trumpet Beach at 90 and Isla Beach at 80. The Fillmore and Avalon ballrooms are convention-scale.

Five packages — Free Spirit, Tropical Paradise, Modern Enchantment, Lavish Daydream and Classic Arrangement — each include the ceremony location, minister, soloist, sparkling wine, audio system, a coordinator, a wedding website and registry, a honeymoon package, and a themed cake for 32 people. Watch that cake number if your reception is larger; it’s a common and entirely avoidable surprise on the final invoice.

Book elsewhere if: you want understated. Hard Rock is loud by design, and that is the whole point of it.

What about the Marriott properties on Kukulcan?

Best for: couples with loyalty points, corporate-scale guest lists, or a preference for a familiar brand standard.

The JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa and the neighbouring Marriott Cancun All-Inclusive Resort share a venue campus at Km 14.5, and it is a serious one: the Maya Ballroom at 800, La Isla Patio at 700, Pool Garden at 500, Caribbean Terrace at 300, plus fountain venues and smaller rooms in the 50 to 180 range. The JW has eight restaurants and two bars, three outdoor pools, and a spa with an adults-only indoor pool. Both are family-friendly, and the Marriott side runs a kids’ pool and entertainment programme. This is the practical pairing when you need real ballroom capacity but want to stay in the Hotel Zone.

Is there a quieter option outside the Hotel Zone?

Best for: couples who want a modern, design-led resort and a calmer beach without going all the way down to the Riviera Maya.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Cancun sits on Playa Mujeres, about 30 minutes from the airport. It is family-friendly, with Blanca Blue, Bocados Steak House and Hiroshi as its specialty restaurants. Venues: Coco’s Beach at 300, Sky Room at 250, Tierraluna Forum at 200, Elite Terrace at 100, Beach Deck at 80. The Gemstone, Sapphire and Opal packages run from a beach ceremony under a bamboo huppah up to soloist, photography and spa inclusions. What if all-inclusive isn’t actually what you want?

The unpopular thing: all-inclusive is a spectacular fit when guests cover their own rooms and you want their costs capped and predictable. It is a poor fit if food and beverage quality is your highest priority and you have the budget to pay à la carte for it.

If that is you, look at NIZUC Resort and Spa: seven venues from Reef Beach at 120 up to Sian Ka’an at 400, six dining venues including Ramona and Ni, fifteen minutes from the airport, and explicitly no cookie-cutter packages. For a Saturday in the December-to-April high season with more than 60 guests, 12 to 18 months is realistic. The constraint is almost never the ceremony venue, it’s the room block — securing 40 rooms in February is a very different conversation at 15 months out than at six.

Do all-inclusive wedding packages actually cover everything?

No, and you should plan on the assumption that they don’t. Packages typically cover ceremony setup, an officiant, a coordinator, basic florals, a cake for a fixed number of people, and a sparkling toast. Reception food and drink beyond a set duration, upgraded florals, DJs, extra photography hours and outside-vendor fees are usually additional. Ask for a line-item quote at your actual headcount.

Is a wedding at a Mexican resort legally binding?
