Short answer: across the 19 Cancun-area resorts we book, the published maximum wedding guest count runs from 100 guests (Sandos Caracol) to 2,500 guests (Moon Palace). Most fall between 200 and 400. If your list is under 200 almost every resort here works; for 200 to 400 guests the field narrows to ten; at 600 or more it is six properties; and above 1,000 there are exactly two.
This page publishes the maximum guest count recorded on each of our own resort listings, side by side. It is the number that decides your shortlist before anything else - before budget, before date, before which beach looks best in photos - and it is the number resort marketing pages almost never state plainly. The trap: a resort maximum is not a venue maximum
This is the single most misread number in destination wedding planning, and it is worth spelling out before you use the table above.
The figure on each listing is the maximum wedding guest count the resort gives us for a wedding group. Individual venues inside that same resort have their own capacities, and those are a different measurement - sometimes far larger, sometimes far smaller.
Hyatt Ziva Cancun is the clearest example. Its listed maximum is 200 guests. But the venue capacities the resort publishes for the same property look like this:
- Elements Ballroom - wedding/reception, 745 guests
- Sahara Beach - wedding, 400 guests
- Punta Vista Terrace - wedding, 200 guests
- Sky Terrace - wedding 100, cocktail 150, reception 120
- Cliff Gazebo - wedding, 65 guests
So the same resort publishes both “200” and “745” depending on which question is being answered. Neither figure is wrong; they measure different things. A ballroom stated capacity is what the room physically holds. A resort stated wedding maximum reflects what the property will support as a wedding group - which is bound up with room availability, catering, staffing and how many events run that week.
What to do with that: use the table to build a shortlist, then have the resort confirm in writing the maximum for your specific date and your specific venue. Those two qualifiers are where the number actually lives. We ask for this in writing as a matter of course before a couple signs anything - a capacity quoted in a brochure and a capacity confirmed for your date in March are not the same commitment.
Venue-by-venue capacities, where the resort publishes them
Three of the resorts above publish a full venue breakdown rather than a single headline number. If your guest count is near a threshold, these are the properties where you can plan with precision.
Hyatt Ziva Cancun
Five wedding venues, from a 65-guest cliff gazebo to a 745-guest ballroom. Listed maximum 200 guests; Hotel Zone; family friendly; beachfront.
| Venue | Wedding | Cocktail | Reception |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elements Ballroom | 745 (wedding/reception) | ||
| Sahara Beach | 400 | - | - |
| Punta Vista Terrace | 200 | - | - |
| Sky Terrace | 100 | 150 | 120 |
| Cliff Gazebo | 65 | - | - |
Wedding package tiers: Just For the Two of You, Intimate Elegance, Luxury, Zama.
Waldorf Astoria Cancun
The most precisely documented small-to-mid wedding venue in this set. Listed maximum 180 guests. Note how sharply reception capacity falls below ceremony capacity at every venue - a seated dinner needs far more square footage per guest than rows of ceremony chairs.
| Venue | Wedding | Cocktail | Reception |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waldorf Ballroom | 180 | 160 | 120 |
| Wedding Pavillion | 80 | 100 | 60 |
| Waldorf Terrace | 40 | 80 | 60 |
| Beach Venue | 20 | 60 | 40 |
| Pool Bar Patio | - | 80 | 40 |
This is the clearest illustration on the page of why “how many guests fit” has three different answers for one venue. The Waldorf Ballroom seats 180 for a ceremony but 120 for dinner. If you have 150 guests, that room works for your ceremony and does not work for your reception - and you would not learn that from a headline capacity figure.
Paradisus Cancún
Listed maximum 600 guests, Hotel Zone.
| Venue | Max capacity |
|---|---|
| Beach Venue | 500 |
| Ballroom Venue | 500 |
| Fuego Terrace | 230 |
| Garden Gazebo | 200 |
| La Palapa Restaurant | 100 |
Shortlist by your guest count
Under 100 guests
Every resort in the table can host you, so capacity should not drive this decision at all - choose on style, budget and room block. Worth knowing: at this size you are the target market for the named “intimate” package tiers, which are usually the best value on any resort menu. Sandos Caracol ECO RESORT (max 100) is only in play at this size, and Waldorf Astoria Cancun smaller venues - the 80-guest Wedding Pavillion, the 40-guest Terrace - are designed for exactly this count.
100 to 200 guests
Still a wide field: 18 of the 19 resorts listed here reach 180 or above. This is the band where the ceremony-versus-reception distinction starts to bite, as the Waldorf Ballroom example above shows. Ask for reception capacity specifically, not ceremony capacity.
200 to 400 guests
The field narrows to ten: Moon Palace, Hard Rock Cancun, JW Marriott, Marriott Cancun All-Inclusive, Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun, Paradisus Cancún, AVA Resort Cancun, Fairmont Mayakoba, NIZUC and Generations Riviera Maya, plus the five properties that top out at exactly 300. This is the most common size for a South Asian or large family wedding, and it is also where room block requirements start to shape the decision as much as venue size does.
400 to 800 guests
Six properties: Moon Palace (2,500), Hard Rock Cancun (1,400), JW Marriott (800), Marriott Cancun All-Inclusive (800), Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun (600) and Paradisus Cancún (600). AVA Resort Cancun reaches 500.
Over 1,000 guests
Two: Moon Palace (Nizuc & Sunrise) at 2,500 and Hard Rock Cancun at 1,400. At this scale you are effectively buying out sections of a resort, and the conversation moves from wedding packages to group contracts. Start early - twelve to eighteen months is normal.
What the package tiers are called
Every resort names its wedding packages differently, which makes comparison shopping harder than it needs to be. Here is what each property actually calls its tiers, so you can line up like with like:
- Hyatt Ziva Cancun - Just For the Two of You, Intimate Elegance, Luxury, Zama
- Hard Rock Cancun - Free Spirit, Classic Arrangement, Tropical Paradise, Modern Enchantment, Lavish Daydream
- Moon Palace and The Grand at Moon Palace - Complimentary Collection, Tropical Traditions, Tropical Sunset, Pure Paradise, Divine
- Planet Hollywood Cancun - PH Free, PH Love, PH Glam
- AVA Resort Cancun - Refined Simplicity, AVANI
- Atelier Playa Mujeres - Together, One Kiss, Entice, Bliss
- Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres & TRS Coral - Lovebirds, Palladium with Love, Evermore, Bliss in Bloom
- Garza Blanca Cancun - Gemstone, Sapphire, Opal
- Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun - Just the Two of Us, Mexican Experience, Refined Wedding, Luxury Wedding, Exclusive Wedding
- Fairmont Mayakoba - Refined Wedding, Luxury Wedding, Exclusive Wedding
- Sandos Caracol ECO RESORT - Seaside Bliss, Sweet Romance, Dreamcatcher, Green Wedding
- Generations Riviera Maya + El Dorado Royale - Always and Forever, Memorable Moments Signature, Memorable Moments Ultimate, and a dedicated South Asian package
- JW Marriott Cancun and Marriott Cancun All-Inclusive - Exclusive Wedding
Nearly every resort entry-level tier is free or close to free when you book a minimum number of room nights. That is the structural fact worth understanding about all-inclusive wedding pricing: the wedding is subsidised by the room block, so the real lever on your total cost is how many rooms your guests book, not which package you pick.
What about cost?
None of the Cancun-area resorts on this page publish package pricing on their listing with us, so we are not going to put invented numbers on this page. What we can point you to is real, published arithmetic from elsewhere in our portfolio:
- Destination wedding cost in Mexico - the general picture
- Moon Palace Cancun wedding cost - the one Cancun property we cover on cost in detail
- What your guests will actually pay - the number couples most often forget to model
- What an all-inclusive wedding package does not include
- How many rooms you need to block - directly relevant, because the room block is what unlocks the free package tier
A note on prices generally: figures published by Mexican resorts are usually quoted before tax and service charge, and Mexico commonly adds roughly 16% tax plus a 15% service charge. Midweek and weekend dates are frequently priced differently as well.
Frequently asked questions
What is the largest wedding you can have in Cancun?
Among the resorts we book, Moon Palace (Nizuc & Sunrise) publishes the highest maximum at 2,500 guests, followed by Hard Rock Cancun at 1,400. Above roughly 1,000 guests you are negotiating a group contract rather than selecting a wedding package.
How many guests can you have at a Cancun beach wedding?
It depends on the specific beach venue rather than the resort. Published beach capacities in this set range from 20 guests at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun beach venue to 500 at the Paradisus Cancún beach venue, with Sahara Beach at Hyatt Ziva Cancun at 400. Beach ceremony capacity is also weather- and tide-dependent in a way indoor venues are not, so ask what the backup venue is and what it holds.
Why does a resort list a lower maximum than its own ballroom capacity?
Because they answer different questions. A venue capacity is what the room physically holds. A resort wedding maximum reflects what the property will support for a wedding group on a given date, which depends on room availability, catering and staffing, and how many other events are running that week. Hyatt Ziva Cancun lists a 200-guest maximum and a 745-guest ballroom for this reason. Always get the number confirmed for your date and your venue.
Do ceremony and reception capacities differ at the same venue?
Yes, often substantially, and it is the most common planning surprise. The Waldorf Astoria Cancun ballroom takes 180 for a ceremony but 120 for a seated reception. Seated dining needs far more space per guest than ceremony seating. When a resort quotes you one capacity number, ask which of the three it is: ceremony, cocktail or reception.
Which Cancun resort is best for a South Asian wedding?
Of the properties on this page, Generations Riviera Maya + El Dorado Royale publishes a dedicated South Asian wedding package. For the wider picture across Mexico and the Caribbean, including which resorts provide for mandap, baraat and sangeet, see our guide to the true cost of a South Asian destination wedding and Indian wedding ceremonies in Cancun.
How far in advance should you book?
For weddings under 100 guests, 9 to 12 months is usually comfortable. Above 200 guests, and particularly above 400, book 12 to 18 months out - the constraint is rarely the venue itself, it is securing enough rooms in one block. See how far in advance to book.
